Twitter or Pinterest?

I don't miss the old days of social networking. It was just more complicated when everyone was trying to get in to the space. The history of technology shows us that oftentimes there will be one major company, one major competitor and several, much smaller alternatives. The trend continues, though paradigm shifts can and do happen. So, how do you determine what is best for your brand?

Theming the Drupal Way: Is Custom Wrong?

It seems to me theming in Drupal is broken up into two camps - those who use a contributed base theme (Zen, Omega, Fusion, etc.) and those who write their own custom themes.  Although I don't have statistics (and would love them if anyone does), it seems to me the most common approach is to use a base theme.  Now, I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all solution to really anything on the web, and I will quickly acknowledge the divers

T-shirts, Shotguns and Ammo

So, you have an idea for a shirt, and you think it's going to sell well. All of your friends have told you they'll buy one, and now it's time to reach out to a merchandise company and realize your dream of product domination.

Optimizing Engagement on Facebook

When it comes to engaging fans on Facebook, it can feel like there's a lot we don't know. On a personal level, Facebook is fantastic when you're just keeping up with friends and acquaintances, but it can also be a game-changer in spreading the word about your product or brand. Knowing when and with what frequency to push status updates and posts to your fan page can dictate the effectiveness of your interaction with your followers.

Your Company Name in Today's Web

Have you ever had the perfect name for your company or product but you couldn't use it because it was already taken? Gene Simmons was in a similar situation when he was originally putting his band together - tons of other groups were performing under the name "Kiss". Luckily, Gene had the foresight to trademark "Kiss" and "KISS" for use in audio recordings, which prevented any other band from releasing music under the same name.

Pinterest

In recent months, countless brands have been jumping on the Pinterest bandwagon, and who can blame them? After all, Pinterest surpassed 10 million unique U.S. visitors quicker than any other standalone website in the history of the Internet. It has over 10.4 million registered users, with 2 million of those logging in daily via Facebook and 9 million logging in monthly via Facebook.

Reflections on DrupalCon Denver 2012

Having just returned last week from a trip to the annual North American DrupalCon in Denver, I wanted to reflect a bit on the importance of the events of the week. First of all, I'm grateful to MCN for sending Joe Stewart and me to the conference for yet another opportunity to further our education and network amongst our peers. This was my second DrupalCon and Joe's third, and it seems to get better every year.

Good Social Strategy

Many people believe that managing your social networks can be as easy as having an intern or assistant post status updates or tweets. Oftentimes when I ask clients what their social media strategy is, the most common answer I hear is that simply posting updates is more or less their game plan. Ultimately, though, a good social strategy is more than just "shouting" online and hoping someone out there will hear you.

Building Momentum on Facebook

It goes without saying that Facebook is the most powerful social networking platform in the world. In fact, Facebook will soon have 1/7 of the world's population using its service, which equates to approximately one billion people.

Architect Your Website for Success

Three weeks ago, a web development friend of mine called me crying. She was upside down on a project and did not know what to do or who to turn to.
