A Foot in the Door

Making Sense of Drupal Development

I distinctly remember my initial impression of Drupal: “why in the world would I use this?” Roughly 2 years ago, Drupal was a confusing landscape of terminology, technology and arcane methodologies – to me, at least. For a time, I considered treating it strictly as a job requirement, and avoiding it on a personal level. Luckily, my stubborn nature got the better of me, and here I am, extolling the virtues of Drupal, practically on a daily basis. What prompted this radical shift in perspective?

Theming the Drupal Way: Is Custom Wrong?

It seems to me theming in Drupal is broken up into two camps - those who use a contributed base theme (Zen, Omega, Fusion, etc.) and those who write their own custom themes.  Although I don't have statistics (and would love them if anyone does), it seems to me the most common approach is to use a base theme.  Now, I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all solution to really anything on the web, and I will quickly acknowledge the divers

Anatomy of a Drupal Feature

The word "feature" tends to be nebulous, ambiguous and perhaps even overused in our industry. As a project manager, I often use it as a way to compartmentalize requests for an update, change or improvement to a website. It's a helpful word - one that gets the client and I on the same page and simplifies our communication.

Your Company Name in Today's Web

Have you ever had the perfect name for your company or product but you couldn't use it because it was already taken? Gene Simmons was in a similar situation when he was originally putting his band together - tons of other groups were performing under the name "Kiss". Luckily, Gene had the foresight to trademark "Kiss" and "KISS" for use in audio recordings, which prevented any other band from releasing music under the same name.

Pinterest

In recent months, countless brands have been jumping on the Pinterest bandwagon, and who can blame them? After all, Pinterest surpassed 10 million unique U.S. visitors quicker than any other standalone website in the history of the Internet. It has over 10.4 million registered users, with 2 million of those logging in daily via Facebook and 9 million logging in monthly via Facebook.

Building Momentum on Facebook

It goes without saying that Facebook is the most powerful social networking platform in the world. In fact, Facebook will soon have 1/7 of the world's population using its service, which equates to approximately one billion people.

Architect Your Website for Success

Three weeks ago, a web development friend of mine called me crying. She was upside down on a project and did not know what to do or who to turn to.

Welcome, Bombplates!

For many years I have wanted MCN to be able to offer an artist or band a DIY web solution that would allow them to build their own website on the same powerful platform we use for our major label clients.

Authorship in Search

Visibility on the web is an important part of your brand. Chances are, there are other brands and brand names similar to yours that are competing with you for spots on search rankings. Getting to the top of the first page seems like an uphill battle that requires constant focus and attention.
