Search Engine Optimization Part II

This week I got an email from a client who had little to no budget but wanted to know how to improve his search engine page rank using viral efforts. I have copied some solid steps below:

1. Submit your domain to the search engines so they begin crawling your page and caching content.

2. Add keywords, to your content. Keywords are the words people enter when searching for something, and when you add relative keywords to your site content, it helps search engines know that your site applies to those keywords.

3. Submitting your site to a diretory can increase site traffic dramatically. Try Demoz.org (apply 1 time or they will view you as spam). Yahoo directory costs $299/year. You can search for your industry directory and see what pops up. Page rank relies heavily on in-bound links, and by appearing in reputable directories you should start to get more people linking to your site.

4. Write press releases - A link embedded in an online press release helps build in bound links which help with page rank. We recommend 1 release/quarter with two to four contextual links back to your website. By "contextual links" I mean a link that contains your keywords instead of simply "Click Here." The press release must be news worthy, and sites like PRWeb.com can syndicate for you based on your budget.

5. Web 2.0 - Write a blog with interesting content so people will link to you (you want 400 words of content with each entry). You can also join forums and put your link in your signature. Keeping an external blog creates linkback credit which helps increase your page rank.

These are five easy and free steps you can do to help focus your site on relative keywords and create more in-bound links which, over time, helps push your page rank higher.
